Alleged drug gang members face racketeering charges

Updated:
New Orleans, La. -

19 members of two alleged gangs accused of dealing drugs and guns in New Orleans are facing racketeering charges.  Nine of the suspects are still on the run.

One of the groups is identified as the Cut-Throat City Snake Gang and operated in the Lower 9th Ward.  The other group calls itself Baka 7 Town and operated in the 7th Ward.

The NOPD, DEA and ATF all worked on the investigation of these gangs.  Orleans District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro says the racketeering indictment, just unsealed, gives state prosecutors an advantage when trial gets underway.

Two of the alleged gang members have been accused of murder in the past.  Shawn Nickerson is already in jail awaiting trial for November 2011 murder on Allen Street.   Kevin Harrison was acquitted of a 2007 murder on North Rocheblave.  In that case, one of the key prosecution witnesses was murdered before the case went to trial.

Both Nickerson and Harrison face life in prison if convicted of these new charges. The other 17 defendants face up to 50 years in jail or, if they're multiple offenders, up to 100 years, if convicted.
