New Orleans, La. -
New Orleans, La. - DEA agents and NOPD officers descended upon a French Quarter home Thursday, seizing chemicals they say are used to make methamphetamine.
Officers also arrested the resident, 33-year-old Scott Kowaleski, on a charge of possession of methamphetamines. Police say they are still questioning the suspect and may bring more charges later.
Thursday's raid happened around noon at the apartment at Bourbon and Dumaine. Kowaleski was home alone at the time, and FOX 8 has exclusive video of the suspect being brought out of the apartment and put into a police squad car.
Authorities confirmed that the chemicals in Kowaleski's apartment were sealed, and no hazardous fumes were detected inside or outside the apartment. Therefore, authorities say the apartment was not an active meth lab. But as a precaution, several blocks of Dumaine were shut down for a few hours, and residents who lived near Kowaleski's apartment were told to stay away.
The suspect's landlord, who didn't want to be identified, tells FOX 8 Kowaleski lived in the building for several years. Neighbors say Kowaleski was a known drug dealer. Those same neighbors tell FOX 8 they've complained to the NOPD numerous times over the past few months about strange behavior going on inside Kowaleski's apartment.
NOPD confirms they started looking at Kowaleski after getting complaints, but they wouldn't say how long they've had an eye on him.
