Baton Rouge, La. – The Louisiana Workforce Commission reports Hurricane Isaac caused a spike in first time claims for unemployment insurance in Louisiana.
For the week ending September 8, initial claims rose to 9,023. That's an increase of more than 6,600 claims over the prior week. The Louisiana Workforce Commission also says this is the most initial claims filed in one week since Hurricanes Gustav and Ike hit Louisiana in September of 2008.
The claims included workers from many industries with the largest increases in construction, retail, and health care.
