Plaquemines residents demand answers about levee protection

Updated:
Braithwaite, La. -

Hundreds gathered at the Braithwaite Auditorium Wednesday night to meet with state and parish leaders.

The Isaac flood victims live in an 18-mile stretch of the east bank of Plaquemines Parish. Most lost everything when flood waters swallowed their homes.  Their biggest complaint during the meeting was the lack of levee protection for their area. They live outside the federal levee system.

Many asked Parish President Billy Nungesser why he hasn't done more to have this area included in the levee system.  Nungesser said he was insulted by any accusations that he hadn't done enough. He said he continues to do everything he can to protection all citizens of Plaquemines Parish.

Residents also reported hitting roadblocks in dealing with insurance companies. Nungesser said he would call Louisiana Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon as soon as possible and ask him to address the concerns.

Nungesser said efforts are under way to get emergency temporary housing through FEMA. He also said debris removal will begin Thursday on the east bank.
