NFL, union referees appear close to contract deal

A deal between the NFL and locked-out union referees could be coming soon.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports the deal, in principle, is "at hand." According to his report, if a deal is worked out, the officials could be back on the field this weekend.

FOX 8 Sports has confirmed the two sides met late Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning.

When contacted via email, the NFL had no comment on the report.

Negotiations have taken on a heightened sense of urgency following the "Monday Night Football" game.  That's when Seattle beat Green Bay 14-12 on a missed call by an official on the final play.
