City tourism officials anticipate strong fall season

Updated:

New Orleans, LA -- New Orleans tourism is starting to heat up as fall gets into full swing.

Tourists are heading to the crescent city by the thousands as they pack up local restaurants and hotels.

The Ernest N. Morial Convention Center recently hosted more than 18,000 people for the AARP convention.

For the nearly 74,000 people who work in the New Orleans metro area hospitality industry, fourth quarter tourism is expected to be a success.

This week, the Water Environment Federation Convention comes to town.

"We then go into back to back conventions really throughout the entire months of October and November and we've also got some really good traditional activities to look forward to like Voodoo Fest and Bayou Classic, also the Workboat Show and Christmas New Orleans style," says Kelly Schulz of the Convention and Visitor's Bureau.

The Water Environment Federation's Annual Technical Exhibition and Conference, is the biggest meeting of its kind in North America and offers thousands of water quality professionals from around the world the best water quality education and training available.

But for those who attend the conventions it's more than just about the great food.

It's about the easy access for exhibitors who set up the booths.

The WEFTEC Convention loves New Orleans so much, they've made a commitment to hold the  convention in New Orleans until the year 2024.

"Something like a Water Environment Federation with 18,000 people, it's millions of dollars of economic impact. And if you look at the fact that they've committed to us for every other year from now until 2024 it's really incredible," says Schulz.
