New taxi cab regulations take effect in metro area

Updated:

New Orleans, La. -- In just a few hours, there may soon be fewer cabbies on the streets of New Orleans.

On Monday approximately 1,600 cabs will undergo tougher regulations as they head for their vehicle inspection.

The new rules require that cabs be outfitted with air conditioning, surveillance cameras, credit card machines and global positioning devices.

Some cabbies worry they can't afford the new updated system.

"I'm out for the business, I can't go outside working," says taxi cab driver Lornisca Burnette.

After nine years as a New Orleans taxi cab driver, she's out of business at least for now under the new rules that take effect Monday.

Under the city's rules, vehicles can't be older than 11 years. That age limit drops to seven years in 2014.
