MARIETTA, Ga. (AP) - A 35-year-old man found guilty of killing a flight attendant in an Atlanta suburb in 1995 has been sentenced to life in prison plus 47 years.
Waseem Daker insisted at sentencing Monday that he was wrongly convicted of killing Karmen Smith and repeatedly stabbing her 5-year-old son Nick. The son, now 22, survived the attack in the suburb of Marietta.
"I did not kill Karmen Smith. I did not stab Nick Smith," Daker told the judge. "I hope that one day the truth comes out."
Prosecutors said Daker killed Smith and attacked her son because he was obsessed with the flight attendant's neighbor. Authorities long suspected Daker but said they didn't link him to the attack until 2009.
Jurors last week found Daker guilty of murder and several other counts.
