Kenner, La – Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop B are investigating a multiple vehicle crash that claimed two lives and left multiple people injured. The accident occurred Saturday at 7:00 a.m. on Interstate 310 Southbound near Highway 3127. The two deceased victims have been identified as 65-year-old Mario Funez of Metairie and 59-year-old Sandra Gonzales of New Orleans.
Police say a car heading southbound on Interstate 310 pulled over and stopped on the shoulder because of mechanical problems. Funez, who was driving an SUV, stopped his vehicle on the shoulder in front of the car, before exiting his vehicle to help. A third car, driven by 20-year-old Jeremy Gullage of Boutte, was also traveling south on Interstate 310 when for unknown reasons, drifted to the right striking the car parked in the shoulder. Gullage's vehicle then struck Funez, before hitting the SUV.
Gonzalez, who was a passenger in the car parked on the shoulder, and Funez were both pronounced dead on the scene. Two other passengers in the parked car received minor injuries. A woman and two children who were passengers in the SUV were not hurt.
Gullage and his passenger were both transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.
Troopers continue to investigate the crash. Investigators do not believe that speed or impairment played a role in the crash. Gullage and his passenger submitted to blood tests and the results are pending. Troopers do believe that fatigue was a factor for Gullage and charges are pending.
