N.O. East interstate wreck kills passenger; driver survives

New Orleans, La. - Police are investigating a fatal accident on Interstate 10 near the Michoud Boulevard exit early Sunday morning.

It happened shortly after 4:00 a.m.  NOPD released a statement, reporting the driver of a 4-door dark-colored Jeep was travelling eastbound on I-10 when, for some unknown reason, the vehicle left the roadway and struck a guardrail. 

The vehicle flipped several times,and the 44-year-old driver was thrown from the Jeep onto the roadway.  "The passenger remained trapped and seat belted in the passenger's seat," reads the NOPD news release.

Emergency responders pronounced the 36-year-old passenger dead on the scene.  NOPD reports the driver is in stable condition at a local hospital.

Investigators are still determining the exact cause of the accident.
