Crime down slightly in Jefferson Parish

Gretna, La. - Statistics from the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office indicate most major crimes have declined since late last year, though rape and theft crimes rose slightly.

JPSO released its September 2012 Uniform Crime Report Tuesday.  Among the findings:

  • 26 murders were reported as of September 2012, down from 43 in the previous year;
  • There were 593 auto thefts reported, a 12.1 percent decline;
  • Burglaries were down 9.3 percent;
  • 55 rapes were reported, compared to 51 in the previous year.
