NOFD investigates marsh fire in N.O. East

FOX 8 News received this press release from the New Orleans Fire Department Tuesday evening:

New Orleans, LA. – Tuesday, October 09, 2012 at 1:46 pm New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) personnel were dispatched to a remote section of eastern New Orleans to investigate a possible fire in the marsh. NOFD personnel did a visual assessment from the Green Bridge and levees surrounding the area to determine the area's accessibility, wind direction and the size of the area involved. The area of the marsh found burning by investigating crews is; uninhabited, approximately 2 miles in circumference located west of I-510 between the Inter-Coastal Waterway and Bayou Bienvenue. A NW wind is currently blowing the smoke out over the Inter-Coastal Waterway and into an uninhabited portion of St. Bernard Parish.

Tomorrow morning the NOFD and Mosquito Control will do an aerial assessment to get a better indication of the scope of this fire and locate any hot-spots that may still be involved. Members of the NOFD will also go out on all-terrain vehicles to try and make a determination of what, if any, type of suppression activity is warranted.
