Council members ban Jefferson Parish Housing Authority

Harahan, La. - The embattled Jefferson Parish Housing authority cannot conduct business inside parish government buildings anymore.

Parish Council members voted Wednesday to ban the Housing Authority. They've been criticizing it since the August release of a scathing federal audit.

The audit concluded the housing authority did not always follow federal requirements in awarding contracts. It questioned more than $600,000 in spending.

Council members have expressed frustration with their inability to take action against the Housing Authority's board. The board functions as a state agency with members serving five-year terms.

The board's former executive director, Barry Bordelon, resigned in August.  Then he was rehired as the Housing Authority's maintenance supervisor.

Council members have passed a resolution calling for the resignations of three other board members. Those board members have not resigned.
