BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Superintendent of Education John White is proposing a revamp of how the state judges whether private and parochial schools should be eligible for public funding.
White unveiled Friday the framework that he's presenting to the state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education next week.
Nonpublic schools need to meet state standards if they want to use parish public school buses and receive state aid for student textbooks.
The process has drawn further attention because private schools must be approved by the state to participate in the new statewide voucher program, though they have to meet other hurdles as well.
White wants to change up some of the data collected. He also wants schools approved by national accrediting agencies to get state approval without having to fill out additional paperwork.
