Hammond, La – Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop L are investigating a hit and run that left a man dead. The crash happened Sunday, just after 10:00 p.m. on Hwy 1064 near Hwy 443 in Hammond. The man has been identified as 53-year-old Van Johnson of Hammond.
Police say that Johnson was riding his bicycle eastbound in the westbound lane of Hwy 1064 when he was struck from behind by a car driven by 19-year-old Aerell Anderson of Hammond. Troopers determined that Anderson crossed the double-yellow line in the center of the road to pass a slower vehicle when he struck Johnson. After the impact, Anderson continued east on Hwy 1064.
Johnson, who was not wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead on the scene by the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner.
During their investigation, troopers located Anderson's abandoned car near the scene of the crash. Shortly thereafter, troopers learned that Anderson turned himself in at the Amite Police Department. A breath alcohol test showed no detectable signs of alcohol in Anderson's system.
Anderson was booked in the Tangipahoa Parish Jail on charges of negligent homicide, hit and run driving, passing in a no passing zone and no driver's license.
