Belle Chasse, La. - There was a packed house for a Tuesday night meeting at the Belle Chasse Auditorium.  The meeting was held for flood victims and was hosted by Parish President Billy Nungesser.

Nungesser says the parish has presented a plan to the state in an effort to secure millions in federal funding to assist with buyouts and home elevations.

"Hopefully we will not have to turn anybody away that has the desire to elevate their house.  And in some cases, where elderly people who do not want to build back, the buyout will give them an option to move to a better protected area immediately," explained Nungesser.

Residents had mixed feelings about the proposed options.  "I would like to elevate if I can. I don't want to sell my property," said one man.

Another man said he would only stay if he were assured of flood protection. He says he doubts that will happen.  "We're looking to move on," he said. "Try to be made whole by insurance...  the buyout is a feasible option for me and I'm hoping to take and proceed with that."

Nungesser says the parish is waiting to to get the green light from the state.  The state has to make sure the parish's plan is within federal guidelines before federal money can be used to fund the buyout/home elevation plan.
