Stranded motorist arrested for attempted murder

Thibodaux, La. – A police officer stopping to help a stranded motorist wound up arresting the man as a suspect in an attempted murder.

Investigators say 20-year-old Charles Edward Mitchell did not have a photo I.D. and gave the officer a fake name.

But, the officer recognized him as the gunshot victim in a case earlier this month. The officer also noticed a handgun in the glove compartment when Mitchell went for his paperwork.

The officer decided to run Mitchell's information through headquarters and brought him in for questioning.

When Mitchell revealed his true identity, it turned out the Marrero man had outstanding warrants for attempted first degree murder and criminal property damage out of Terrebonne Parish.

Mitchell is also booked with a weapons charge related to the gun in the car. Police say the weapon was not registered.
