Livingston Parish detectives try to determine what motivated a husband to cut his wife's unborn child out of her.

It happened Tuesday morning in the town of Walker. 31-year-old Jeffery Reynolds is now charged in the murder of the fetus and attempted murder of his wife. She remains in the hospital in critical but stable condition.

According to a police report, Reynolds stabbed his wife with a kitchen knife inside their home on Milton Road In Walker. During the attack, police say, Reynolds cut his wife's throat and abdomen, then removed the unborn baby.

"It's tough on your investigators, your first responders, it's tough on everybody," said Livingston Parish Sheriff Jason Ard.

Detectives says the fetus was found dead on the scene with a large laceration on the top of its skull.  Sheriff's deputies arrived to find Reynolds kneeling over his wife.

"We looked across the street and saw how irate he was, kind of struggling with the cops a little bit. At one point they restrained him with a gurney," said neighbor Anna McDonald.

"He was howling like an animal. It was a stream of consciousness rambling and ranting and raving and what have you," said neighbor Julia Collins.

The 28-year-old woman was seven-and-a-half months pregnant.

"We had talked to the other neighbors, and she said she had heard them kind of fussing back and forth and she said she just walked back inside, she said she just heard them fighting," said McDonald.

Neighbors say the couple had a son who was at school during the incident. One neighbor who saw all the emergency vehicles Tuesday morning thought the woman was having a premature baby.  But, she says, what she saw when she went over to the home horrified her.

"She was grievously injured, just grievously injured. It was apparent that her baby was grievously injured," said Collins.

"I don't even have the words how she feels, how her family feels, how their whole life just changed in a matter of hours. He was just putting his child on a school bus. It's a little shocking," said McDonald.

"All family looking happy, two weeks ago... he had family here, everybody looking happy," said neighbor Omar Durand.

Reynolds is charged with feticide and attempted second-degree murder. Investigators are waiting for toxicology reports to determine if there were any drugs in his system.

The Livingston Parish Coroner's office is conducting an autopsy on the fetus.
