Bullet-riddled Yorktown Drive asks city leaders for help

Updated:
New Orleans, La. -

War broke out on Yorktown Drive Tuesday night.

"I had to run and grab my son, it sounded like they shot three- or four-hundred times," said Tyrone Conley.

Another woman said a bullet took out her windshield and another lodged on the roof of her car.

"It wasn't handguns, it was big guns," Conley said.

Bullets hit six people, killing one man.

Tiffany Turner says her son was lucky.  "He was outside shooting basketball," she said.

Conley said when the guys stopped playing the gunfire began.  He saw his friend, Correy Harris, take a bullet.

"He was still talking when they were putting him in the ambulance. He said it was starting to get harder to breathe. I told him 'don't give up, tank, don't give up.'"

Conley says Harris' birthday was Monday; Tuesday night, he lost his life.

Neighbors say even before the shooting, the street didn't feel safe.  Most of the streetlights in their block don't work.

"The cops when they came last night they had to bring their own light," one woman said.

"At night, when you come out your front door, it's pitch black," said Jackie Batiste.  She says she's called the city for the past year about the light in front of her house.

Light may not have stopped the bloodshed, but neighbors want the city to meet them halfway and help them fix their shattered sense of safety.
