Voodoo Music Experience kicks off Friday

New Orleans, La. -

The 2012 Voodoo Music and Art Experience kicks off Friday morning in City Park. Organizers expect thousands of people from around the world to spend Halloween weekend in New Orleans.

This year will be the festival's 14th run in City Park.

"A hundred-thousand or more people will be part of the activity, the weather is going to be great this weekend, so City Park is going to be looking really good," said Mark Romig, CEO of the New Orleans Tourism Marketing Corporation.

On five stages, a number of artists will fill the park with music the entire Halloween weekend for the 2012 Voodoo Experience, and for the first time this year festival-goers have an opportunity to camp out.

"We have general admission camping, and we have VIP camping where people get a safari tent, a real bed, real linen, they have a fridge in the tent, they have electricity, they have all this great stuff," said Voodoo festival organizer Sig Greenebaum. "It's going to be huge. We just announced Metallica two weeks ago, and that has just been mind-blowing, how big that has been, putting them in the mix two weeks before a festival. You don't get to do that, you know, you don't get to bring in Metallica two weeks before your event, and we did, so it was really cool."

"New Orleans is known as a great Halloween location because of the atmosphere, you've got the authenticity of New Orleans, the historic aspect of it," said Romig.

That's why Romig says hotel occupancy for the weekend will be at least 90 percent. According to our partners at New Orleans CityBusiness, hotel occupancy so far this year is running five percent ahead of 2011.

"So between that, we've got the plastic surgeons in town, that's going to be another 4,000 plus people," said Romig.

A forecast of cooler weather adds even more anticipation as tourism leaders look forward to an especially busy weekend.

Friday's Voodoo headliners include legendary performers such as Bootsy Collins and Neil Young and Crazy Horse.

The big act Saturday is Metallica, and there's a trio of big-named highlights Sunday, rapper Nas, Skrillex, and rocker Jack White.
