Man commits suicide after standoff with police in Mid-City

New Orleans, La. - NOPD officers say a 27-year-old man killed himself after a 3 hour standoff with Police.

An officer observed a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed on Banks Street earlier that evening. After attempting to stop the driver, the vehicle stopped in a driveway in the 400 block of South Genois Street.

The driver exited the vehicle and during questioning pushed the officer and fled. After catching the suspect and struggling again, the officer tazed the suspect. The suspect resisted and fled again.

After attempting to enter his residence, he broke in and the other tenant exited the house. The suspects' roommate informed the officers there were guns and ammunition in the house. A SWAT team was called to the house a short time later.

After several hours, SWAT entered the house and found the man with a gun shot wound to the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The officer involved in the struggle suffered a minor injury.
