Irvin Mayfield honored by New Orleans school

Updated:

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A New Orleans school is dedicating one of its halls to hometown trumpeter Irvin Mayfield.

The Grammy-nominated musician, who serves as artistic director of the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, is Success Preparatory Academy's first inductee into its "Hall of Heroes" honoring local role models.

The school's assistant principal, Eric Kelt, says Mayfield was selected as the first inductee because of his success in both music and business. Besides acquiring musical accolades, Mayfield has opened two music clubs.

The school's hall will feature a musical mural, photo of Mayfield and his biography. There will also be a banner with a quote from Mayfield about the importance of community service.

Mayfield called the honor "gratifying and humbling."

A ceremony was held Monday.
