After Further Review: Payton to Dallas Doesn't Make Sense

New Orleans, La - One of the best pieces of advice I've ever gotten was when a mentor once told me, know who you are and more importantly know who you are NOT. Know what you know, and know what you don't. Be comfortable with yourself and never pretend to be someone you're not.

It's that logic that makes the marriage between Sean Payton and Mickey Loomis work so well. And it's exactly why uniting Payton with Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys would lead to an ugly divorce.

From the personnel down to the practice schedule, Payton is a football genius. When it comes to Saints football, EVERY ASPECT goes through him.

Loomis is the salary cap master. He wisely doesn't waste time in player evaluation. He knows that's Payton's department. Loomis is there to make the numbers work.

Both men are excellent at what they do and both men respect each other's boundaries. Payton doesn't try to be the accountant. Loomis doesn't mess with X's and O's.

It's beautiful synergy. One that a lot of teams would kill to have.

In Dallas, Payton would not have that same relationship. In Dallas, they wear stars on their helmets. But the only true star is Jones. He's the face of the Cowboys. And he always will be.

Jones is owner and general manager and if he could physically do it, would probably like to be head coach too.

Payton is a guy who needs total control of his program. He gets that without the slightest interference here in New Orleans. In Dallas, that control would be shared with a man who's convinced he knows more about football more than any head coach he's ever hired.

It may make juicy headlines. But the truth is, it's a recipe for disaster.

One I'm sure Payton is well aware of.

But as we've come to learn in this post-bounty world, nothing is guaranteed. And anything can happen.
