Suspect named in deaths of woman, 2 daughters

David Brown, 35 David Brown, 35

LOCKPORT, La. (AP) - A 34-year-old Houma man has been named a suspect in the weekend stabbing deaths of a woman and her two young daughters, who were inside an apartment that was then set ablaze.

David Brown invoked his right to counsel when deputies began to question him about the triple homicides, Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre said Monday.

Brown was booked with unauthorized entry into an inhabited dwelling and simple battery stemming from a separate incident the night of the murders, the sheriff said. He is being held on $110,000 bond and under an additional hold placed by the Louisiana Department of Probation and Parole, he added.

"We have compelling evidence at this point, and we are working diligently to develop additional leads and forensics that further solidify David Brown's involvement in this horrific crime," Webre said. "As the investigation continues, we expect to bring additional charges relative to the murders and possibly additional related crimes."

Though Brown has been questioned in the case, he has not been charged in the early Sunday deaths of Jacqueline Gautreaux Nieves, 29; her 6-year-old daughter, Gabriella Nieves and 20-month-old daughter Isabella Nieves.

Carlos Nieves Jr., the woman's husband and father of the children, was initially considered a "person of interest" in the crime was questioned for several hours Sunday. Detectives said he was cooperative, and there is currently no evidence implicating him in the crime, the sheriff said.

Deputy Brennan Matherne, a sheriff's spokesman, said the coroner has sent the bodies to Jefferson Parish for full autopsies Monday. Those will tell whether the three died before the fire.

Lockport Police Chief Warren Vedros said it was the city's first homicide in about 40 years.
