Residents return to Braithwaite to vote

Braithwaite, La. -

Residents displaced by Hurricane Isaac returned to Braithwaite Tuesday to vote.

In August, floodwaters destroyed Rodney Williams' Braithwaite home. "It was up to the ceiling, didn't go into the ceilings but up to the ceilings," Williams said of the water.

He moved in with relatives in Kenner after the hurricane, but Tuesday he made the hour-long trek back to Braithwaite, where he's registered to vote.

"I was in the service, and our right, that's the thing I want to do. I want to vote. I'm going to cast my vote and let them know this is what I think is the right thing to do," Williams said.

Voters here cast their ballots in a trailer. It's a makeshift polling place set up behind the Braithwaite Auditorium since their old polling location was destroyed by Isaac.

Many voters filing into the trailer drove in from areas outside of Plaquemines. And many say they can sympathize with Hurricane Sandy victims as they struggle to recover.

Elvina Campbell said, "I know their pain and I've been there twice, so I know how they feel."

Cassandra Reddick advised, "Continue to have faith. Everything is going to work out, it might seem like it's a little dark now but it'll work out."

And while voting may be the last thing on the minds of Hurricane Sandy victims, storm survivors in Braithwaite say it's something everyone must do.

"Hopefully provisions have been made for them to still have their election today," Reddick said.

Rodney Williams commented, "In one way it's really disturbing because you've really got your own tragedies and your own problems and yet you know it's your duty to do this and you have to do this because that's one of the freedoms that we do have."

Williams says the hour-long drive he made Tuesday was worth it, because every vote counts.
