Baton Rouge, La. (AP) - Rodney Alexander, the dean of Louisiana's U.S. House delegation, is keeping his northeast Louisiana-based congressional seat after handily defeating two challengers.

A Republican from Quitman, Alexander didn't receive much organized opposition from the two men running against him for the 5th District seat in Tuesday's election.

Political newcomer Clay Grant, a Libertarian, and Ron Ceasar, an Opelousas independent who lost a bid for governor last year, didn't report fundraising in their attempts to unseat Alexander.

Alexander, a contractor, was first elected to Congress in 2002. He'll be entering his sixth term.

All or part of 24 parishes are in the rural 5th District, which covers northeast Louisiana, the Alexandria area and parts of the state that run along the Mississippi state line.
