KENNER, La. (AP) - Drivers will have to slow down a little later in the day when driving near schools after the City Council changed school zone time limits in Kenner to account for extended school days caused by Hurricane Isaac.
Council members voted to extend school zones as late as 5 p.m. to account for students who will spend more time in classrooms after Hurricane Isaac forced schools to close for up to a week when it struck Aug. 28. New signs will be posted after the city decides how each school will be affected.
The Advocate reports Councilwoman Maria Defrancesch proposed the change. She said many drivers would not know about the extension of school days without signage and would assume the normal speed limits were in effect.
