Final results in CCC toll vote coming

New Orleans, La. - With the results of a vote on extending tolls on the Crescent City Connection for 20 years still hanging in the balance, some voters are losing patience.

Election day was nearly a week ago and still not all votes have been counted in Orleans Parish.

At this point, those wanting the tolls to go away are losing by just eight votes.  32 military votes in Orleans Parish, though, won't be counted until Tuesday morning.

The hold-up came when the Secretary of State allowed military ballots to come in late because of Hurricane Sandy and a plane crash in Afghanistan.

Representative Patrick Connick of Marrero, who campaigned for months against the tolls, believes there should be a recount of the absentee ballots, no matter what the outcome.

"Since it's close, I think both sides should want those recounted to keep the integrity of the process," says Connick.

Connick questions the results of several mail-in ballots in Orleans Parish that had to be counted by hand on the night of the election.

Orleans Clerk of Court Arthur Morrell confirmed to FOX 8 that results from the electronic vote showed the majority of voters were against the tolls but, after the absentee ballots were added in, the results changed to give the pro-extension vote an eight-point lead.

"And if that's the case, we can live with that but what was the switch about?  I think that switch was the hand-counted ballots," says Connick

Connick says the margin for error is much greater with those mail-in ballots. He even sent a letter to Morrell requesting information about the total number of early votes cast.

In the meantime, commuters wait for the final results.
