BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - House Speaker Chuck Kleckley, the target of an unsuccessful recall effort, is asking the state ethics board to waive the $1,000 fines faced by the teachers who tried to recall him.
Calcasieu Parish public school teachers Angie Bonvillian and Brenda Romero, who also led a failed recall against Gov. Bobby Jindal, missed a deadline to file a report 45 days after the recall drives began.
Bonvillian and Romero are asking the Board of Ethics to waive or reduce the penalties, saying they didn't know of the reporting requirement.
Kleckley says he sent a letter to board members Wednesday, saying the reporting requirements can be unclear to people not regularly involved in politics and urging the board to waive the penalty.
The ethics board is scheduled to consider the request Friday.
