FOX 8 News received this press release from NOPD Monday afternoon:
Fifth District officers arrested two would-be burglars within 15 minutes of the suspects breaking into a resident's home in the Bywater neighborhood.
Detectives say a 13-year-old boy, armed with what the victim believed was a pistol, walked into a house in the 900-block of France Street just before 2pm yesterday, and demanded car keys from the victim. The victim said there was also a second gunman in the doorway, who was later identified as 17-year-old Anthony Woodberry, who was apparently serving as a lookout.
While this was happening, one of the victim's friends emerged from another room in the house, started yelling and startled both suspects. Both took off in different directions. At that point, the victims called 9-1-1 and gave accurate descriptions of both perpetrators.
Within minutes, Officer Kevin Rickmon, who was patrolling the area, apprehended the 13-year-old, who had made it to the St. Claude Bridge. He was toting what turned out to be a bb gun.
Officer Melvin Wiltz, who was also in the neighborhood, quickly caught up with the second suspect, Woodberry, who had made it to the 4300-block of North Rampart Street. At the time of arrest, Woodberry did not have a weapon on him.
Both suspects were positively identified by the victims and subsequently booked with Aggravated Burglary.
"Our Fifth District Commander, Chris Goodly, had assigned some of his officers to focus on the France Street neighborhood last weekend after observing a recent, slight uptick in burglaries there- so he acted to deal with it immediately", said Superintendent Ronal Serpas.
"These speedy arrests can be attributed to our people being on top of this situation- from Commander to Patrol Officers. This was calculated, exemplary work by the Fifth District, and should be a comfort to residents citywide."
