Jonathan Avitia was as healthy as any other 29 year old when he started experiencing a slight chest pain September 2011. A trip to urgent care for what he thought was a pulled muscle changed his life forever. An xray of the chest showed a large mass behind his sternum. A subsequent CT scan and biopsy confirmed malignancy.
Within a week Jonathan was diagnosed with stage 3 testicular cancer with extragonadal germ
cell tumors and started his first round of chemo at MD Anderson. Because of the rarity and seriousness of his disease, he was advised to stay in Houston for the duration of his treatment plan, which meant leaving his life and business in New Orleans on hold.
Since diagnosis Jonathan has had 9 rounds of chemo and 2 gamma
knife radiation surgeries. This past summer he underwent 2 stem cell transplants as part of a clinical trial, but unfortunately, the treatments were not able to completely stop the cancer. He is currently undergoing treatment every two weeks and hopes to continue this regimen to maintain his disease and prevent any further progression.
