NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Bridget Dinvaut has been elected chairwoman of the Southern University Board of Supervisors.

Dinvaut was elected Friday during the board's meeting in New Orleans. Patrick Bell of Thibodaux was elected vice chairman.

Dinvaut is an honors graduate of the Southern University Law Center and an assistant district attorney in St. John the Baptist Parish.

She is co-founder and secretary of the Rudolph G. Dinvaut Athletic Foundation established in 2004 in honor of her late father, a graduate of Southern University who was inducted into the school's Sports Hall of Fame in 1998.

Bell is deputy commissioner for minority affairs at the Louisiana Department of Insurance. He is a former government relations director for Capital One Financial Corporation and former vice president, government relations, for Hibernia Corporation.

In a news release, Southern said the two replace Darren Mire, chairman for the past two years, and Murphy Bell Jr., vice chairman for two years, who both continue to serve on the board.

"Both of these Board members are respected for their work for Southern University, professionally, and in the community. We are confident in their leadership and fortunate to have them," said Mire.
