New Orleans, La. -- The cease-fire between Israel and Hamas marks a new chapter in the decades-old vicious cycle of violence between Israelis and Palestinians.
Sunday, members of the Jewish Federation of Greater New Orleans hosted an event to show their support. The event featured members of the local Jewish clergy, followed by a spiritual and musical program. Members of the local Palestinian community are hoping for peace as well.
Senators Mary Landrieu and David Vitter attended to show their support for Israel.
"You have to start with the basis of Hamas as a terrorist organization. The other fact that Israel has already given up so much land, can hardly give up anymore to sustain itself, and that Hamas has to stop the constant attacks on Israel. Israel has a right to defend itself," says Landrieu.
Eight days of fighting left more than 160 Palestinians and five Israelis dead.
"We know that Israel has the most powerful army in the Middle East and basically they are unjustly bombing the civilians," says Nabil Abukhader of the local Palestinian community.
Members of the Jewish community and the Palestinian community say they want peace.
"I want them free, equal justice for all," says Abukhader.
"God forbid more shots may be fired in the future," says Michael Weil of the Jewish Federation of Greater New Orleans.
