NOPD: Arrests during Bayou Classic up from last year

New Orleans, La. - The city of New Orleans hosted an exciting Bayou Classic game over the weekend.

Southern and Grambling fans flooded the city for the annual football event.

Monday, the NOPD released what it calls its "Bayou Classic Arrest Statistics."

When compared to last year, arrests were up in several categories including felony arrests, physical arrests, and total arrests include everything from traffic, municipal offenses, misdemeanors and juvenile violations.

There were 99 arrests in the 8th District this weekend, compared to 80 during Classic weekend last year (an increase of nearly 24%).

20 of those arrests were for felonies, compared to 14 last year.  Officers arrested 9 people for illegally carrying guns compared to 8 last year.

About half of those arrested on gun charges this Bayou Classic weekend were charged with Convicted Felon in Possession of a Firearm.
