Updated:

FOX 8 News received this press release from DOTD Monday afternoon:

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) is pleased to announce the availability of $1,000 scholarships for civil engineering students with an interest in transportation.

This opportunity has been made available through DOTD in conjunction with the Southeastern Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (SASHTO). Scholarship award applications will be evaluated and administered by the Louisiana Transportation Research Center (LTRC).

DOTD Secretary Sherri H. LeBas said, "DOTD is proud to provide students the opportunity to further their education in the field of civil engineering. It is imperative that we ensure the success of Louisiana by investing in future leaders and by supporting the best and brightest in the transportation field."

Junior and senior undergraduate students attending Louisiana universities with a declared major in civil engineering are eligible to apply. Applicants must be in good academic standing and have a professed interest in the transportation field as a vocation. The student's interest in transportation must be expressed in a one-page description relating academic choices and career goals.

The student must express his/her interest in a one-page paper, which relates their academic choices to their career goals. The deadline for receipt of applications is December 7, 2012.

The LTRC Policy Committee will evaluate applicants and select recipients based on the following requirements:

  • GPA: 20-40 points
  • Interest and Motivation in Transportation: 0-20 points
  • DOTD Summer Engineering Student or Co-Op Student: 0-40 points

Students should apply through the Chair of the Civil Engineering Department at their respective university. Scholarship recipients are eligible to reapply in subsequent years.

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) is committed to delivering transportation and public works systems that enhance the quality of life. In addition to more than 16,600 miles of roadway, including over 890 miles of interstate, DOTD supports the development of the state's aviation, marine and rail infrastructures. Through this work, we are able to facilitate economic development, create job opportunities, improve vital evacuation routes, and make critical freight corridors safer and more efficient.
