Police have arrested a second suspect in a shooting in New Orleans East that killed a local college student and wounded her boyfriend in September.
FOX 8 News received this press release from the New Orleans Police Department Tuesday afternoon:
Officers arrested a second suspect yesterday in connection with the murder of a college student and the wounding of her boyfriend in New Orleans East nearly two months ago.
After interviewing more witnesses and gathering more information, Detective Gregory Hamilton was able to develop 26-year-old Myron Jackson as the second gunman who fired shots through the bedroom window of a home in the 7700-block of Branch Drive on September 30th, killing 18-year-old Marguerite Washington and wounding her boyfriend, 19-year-old Justin Alexander.
NOPD arrested the first gunman in the shooting, 21-year-old Jeffery Washington, just 2 days after the incident. He was charged with Second Degree Murder and Attempted Second Degree Murder. Previously, he had been arrested for Domestic Battery.
Myron Jackson is also booked with Second Degree Murder and Attempted Second Degree Murder. He has prior arrests for Armed Robbery, Aggravated Battery, Aggravated Assault, Disturbing the Peace, Traffic Violations and warrants. Jackson was also on parole for Simple Robbery in September 2004 through January 2005.
"While they were on the crime scene that morning in September, detectives learned that there were bullet casings from not one, but two guns. After quickly arresting the first triggerman, they remained focused on this case until they could identify the person responsible for firing the other shots that day", said Superintendent Ronal Serpas.
"Again, members of the community came forward to tell our detectives what they knew, and that helped us in making this second arrest. This partnership with residents indisputably is making us a safer city."
