Elton "Mark" McCabe
Slidell, La. - U.S. Senator David Vitter says U.S. relations with South Sudan will become less friendly if the country's government does not release a Slidell man.
"We're looking at this case very seriously as a test of their judicial system and their intentions," the Louisiana Republican said on the Senate floor Tuesday. "If this unjust detention continues, I'll make sure there are repercussions to that relationship."
Elton "Mark" McCabe was arrested in October on a kidnapping claim. His wife has confirmed to FOX 8 that authorities in the country have taken him to a medical clinic under guard. He suffered a mild heart attack in jail.
A second phase of McCabe's trial is scheduled for this week. That's when authorities in South Sudan will decide whether to press on with the case or to free McCabe entirely.
