Withings (pronounced "why-things," like "sightings.") is an unusual company, even in the high-tech realm. They're based in France, but their product line couldn't be more advanced if they hailed from Silicone Valley.
Interestingly, one of my first segments on the Fox 8 Morning News was about the WithingsWiFi Body Scale. How long ago? BlackBerrys were all folks carried back then, so it's been several years!
The Body Scale is a WiFi-connected personal weight scale that automatically records your body weight, lean and fat mass, and body mass index (BMI). It even posts the data to a secure web page and/or to a free Withings' iPhone application, WiScale.
I'm still not sure how it calculates body mass by using bio electric impedance analysis (BIA), but somehow it does. The nine-inch black and steel model is still available and has been joined by a version done in pure white. The price for either is $159.00. For more information, visit Withings.com.
New & Improved Wireless Scale
Withings recently introduced a new scale, called the Wireless Scale WS-30. This model combines Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity to offer a seamless, PC-free experience.
The new scale instantly recognizes individual users and works in harmony with the new, free Withings Health Companion app. You can keep it at home or take it with you on vacation. No PC is required, not even for setup. All you need is a smart phone or tablet with Bluetooth.
The WS-30 features Withings Position Control technology, which offers visual feedback for users to properly position themselves for high-accuracy weighing. The Withings Health Companion app allows easy and secure access to weight and BMI data stored on the scale, plus it displays your weight, physical activity, heart and sleep data on a single user-friendly dashboard.
The scale is suitable for the whole family and can keep track of up to eight different profiles. Your can keep your data private or share it seamlessly with a doctor or a sports coach for example. The Withings WS-30 Wireless Scale retails for $129.95 for more information, visit Withings.com.
Blood Pressure Monitor
With hypertension affecting almost 25% of the world population, blood pressure measurement can help to save lives. Automated devices for self-measurement have been around for quite a while, but with the Withings Blood Pressure Monitor, measuring and understanding your blood pressure couldn't be easier.
All data is saved to a secure online space for easy measurement access and retrieval via iPhone, iPad or iPod. The unit retails for $129.95. For more information, visit Withings.com.
Smart Baby Monitor
Using a baby monitor is a must with newborns, but Withings has produced a device that goes beyond simple video/audio surveillance. It also gives parents important information on their child's environment and allows them to interact with their child remotely.
Unlike traditional monitors, the Withings Smart Baby Monitor is made for iOS devices. The unit features a high-resolution 3MP camera, extra wide view lens and night vision with infrared LEDs, all designed to give parents access to a multitude of information, including night vision and temperature/humidity data.
The unit is also equipped with a microphone that allows parents to interact and sooth their child even when they are not physically in the room. Additionally, you can control the music (lullabies) that play in the room through the monitor and can change songs or play-lists right from the living room, the office or from anywhere in the world.
Alarms, which are user-customizable, can be set to detect baby sleep disruption. Furthermore, the unit will adapt itself to the best network path, be it local with Bluetooth, WiFi or wire.
The monitor's hinge design allows quick adjustment of field of view. Simply shut the clamshell case to power it off. The camera is then protected for transportation. The Withings Smart Baby Monitor sells for $299.99. For more information, visit Withings.com.
