Improperly stored explosives moved

Updated:

DOYLINE, La. (AP) - Another 200,000 pounds of improperly stored explosive material at north Louisiana's Camp Minden had been safely moved and stored as of Thursday night, police said.

That brought the total amount of explosive propellant moved in six days to about 2.2 million pounds. State police had estimated 6 million pounds were improperly stored when work began Saturday.

Authorities will resume work Friday morning and suspend it at noon, with plans to begin the work again Monday, said state police Sgt. James Anderson.

Also at noon, they plan to lift a voluntary evacuation for the nearby town of Doyline (doy LEEN'), he said. Authorities have said previously that many in the town of 800 never left or have already returned.

The explosives were stored at Explo Systems Inc., a business that leases land at the state's Camp Minden industrial site.

The explosives were found stuffed into corridors that connect storage buildings at an Explo Systems facility at Camp Minden. Authorities had feared a chain reaction could be set off if the corridors were not cleared. They also feared that materials found stored outside could be ignited by lightning.

Explo Systems recycles military munitions at the site in Webster Parish, a former military base that's now mostly an industrial park but is still guarded by military police.

Authorities had thought the move would be completed by now, but the process has taken longer than first estimated.
