Slidell, La. - A Slidell man is behind bars after breaking into a local pet store where he stole three reptiles and a cash register.
On Wednesday, Slidell Police responded to a report of a burglary at Delta Pets, located at 1370 Corporate Square, after the owner opened the business discovered the back door had been pried opened. The owner found that the cash register, a $600 Ball Python and two Boa snakes were missing.
Slidell Police searched the area and observed several other businesses in the area that had pry marks on the doors. While checking the other businesses, police discovered an open door on a vacant building. While searching the building, a makeshift bed was found along with three snakes and a jail ID card bearing the name Donald Laigast, Jr.
Detectives had enough information to obtain a warrant for the arrest of Laigast who had recently been released from jail for other burglary charges. Later that evening, Laigast was arrested and charged with one count of Simple Burglary. Laigast admitted that he broke into Delta Pets and stole the snakes as a Christmas present for his son. The investigation is still ongoing, and more charges are expected.
