Facebook friends help track down a suspected thief

Norco, La. - It's a testament to the power of social media. A St. Charles Parish woman enlists the help of her Facebook family to track down a suspect in a yard sale wallet snatching.

Niki Short was closing up shop on her Saturday garage sale when one last customer stopped in to take a look. "I was like sure go ahead and look please," said Short.

While the woman browsed the glassware, the man who brought her there apparently had his eye on something else. "My car was parked right here and the driver's window was open and my wallet was sitting on the passenger side," said Short.

After the pair left, Short realized her wallet was missing from her car. Home surveillance video quickly shed some light on the mystery.

"You can see his hands through the window," said Short. "He got it," she said as she showed Fox 8 the video.

After seeing what her cameras had captured, Short went straight to her computer. "I started posting on Facebook. You know look, to all my friends in the local area, this is what this guy just did in my driveway in front of me. If you see this truck, help me out."

And boy did they step in to help. They started sharing pictures of the truck and telling friends to be on the look out. "Then I come home, there's messages that people all over St. Charles Parish are driving all over the parish looking for this truck and they don't know me from Adam, but they're searching for the truck," said Short.

As they helped in the search, they offered tips on Short's timeline. "Then that one lead, that one lead came and I went and there it was," said Short.

Short found the truck in Destrehan and called the St. Charles Parish Sheriff's Department. "They were like, what are you talking about? I'm like, oh I found the truck. I found truck," said Short. "Well, I was right. It was the truck."

Deputies ended up arrested Matthew Savoie on a charge of simple burglary. "In less than 24 hours we had him," said Short. One of the detectives did kind of shake his head and said, how did you do that? Facebook, Facebook!"

Short says the wallet was stolen around 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. Savoie was arrested around 11:00 a.m. on Sunday.
