Police have a suspect in custody in a shooting in the Leonidas area that left a man critically wounded Tuesday evening.

It happened around 5:25 p.m. in the 8800 block of Hickory Street.  Police say the 28-year-old victim was inside a house there when the suspect, 19-year-old Terence Hampton, allegedly entered the house and shot the victim in the chest.

"Family members restrained Hampton until police arrived," reads a brief statement from NOPD. "The 28-year-old victim was taken to the hospital in critical condition. The suspect Hampton was taken to the hospital for minor injury sustained from family members restraining him."

NOPD plans to book Hampton with attempted murder after his treatment and release from the hospital, likely later Tuesday night.

It is not clear what led to the shooting and investigators are still collecting information on this case.

If you have any information for police, please call NOPD or Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111.
