Mississippi's Marine Resources chief suspended amid probe

BILOXI, Miss. (AP) - The Commission on Marine Resources has suspended its executive director without pay while state and federal investigators look into allegations of misspending and favoritism in the Department of Marine Resources.

Commission Chairman Vernon Asper said after a closed-door meeting that the FBI has joined the State Auditor's Office in the investigation of department spending under Bill Walker.

The Sun Herald reports that the commission said Walker has done an excellent job running the department, and commissioners hope he will be cleared.

Asper says the investigation could be completed in February.

The closed-door meeting lasted more than two hours.
