BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Louisiana anglers and those planning a fishing trip to the state will be able to get information, licenses and a spot to chat online with other fishermen at what state tourism officials call a fishing microsite opening early in January.
Louisiana is the world's finest fishing destination, said Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne, whose job includes selling the state as its tourism leader.
"Fishing is one of our many passions in Louisiana. We want to give the industry a shot in the arm," he told The Advocate.
The microsite will be linked on the tourism agency website, www.louisianatravel.com, he said, and will include a link to the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries website, where people can buy fishing licenses online.
Information will include freshwater and saltwater fishing opportunities, loading and landing sites, locations of record catches, where different species can be caught, fishing limits and seasons, he said. It will also include information about guides and charter fishing businesses.
"The goal is to have it up right after the first of the year," Dardenne said. "I hope it's going to be very popular. I think it's going to provide a wealth of information for people who want to travel to fish."
He said the site is part of the state's 2013 tourism push, which also will promote Louisiana music and places and events where it is showcased, Dardenne said.
The tourism agency will use contacts with Bass Masters and the charter fishing association and maybe do some targeted advertising, Dardenne said.
