Mystery accident in French Quarter leaves woman in hospital

New Orleans, La. - Ryan Dowd and a group of friends were celebrating New Year's Eve in the French Quarter when their night of partying came to a screeching halt.

"We were leaving and we were going to hail a cab when our friend was hit by a car," says Dowd.

Dowd says he had walked across Decatur Street near the Jax Brewery when it happened.  He didn't see the accident but found his friend, 21-year-old Amanda Piglia, knocked out on the ground.

She was rushed to University Hospital.  Amanda's mother and father arrived there to find their daughter in a medically-induced coma.

"She does have a shattered pelvis and she will be in the hospital for about three to four weeks. She will need surgery and she'll have to be in rehab. After that, she'll be in a wheelchair for three to four months," says Theresa Piglia.

Amanda's parents are extremely upset and say they really don't know exactly what happened to their daughter.  "We have no calls from anyone with the police department and the hospital has no clue," says Thomas Piglia.

"What we're hearing is when they were trying to get the cab on Decatur Street, a car ran into two children, one of them being my daughter. She was thrown into oncoming traffic and another car ran over her. That individual stayed but the original car that caused the accident left," says Theresa Piglia.

That, though, is just what Amanda's family is being told. They hope someone will come forward with more concrete information.

We contacted the NOPD Tuesday but were told the police report was not yet unavailable.
