A partial view of the land off Brewster Road
Covington, La. -- A St. Tammany Parish councilman is asking for a delay in a rezoning hearing regarding land in Covington at the center of a development dispute.
The St. Tammany Zoning Commission rejected a push from Goux Properties to rezone a portion of the property to heavy commercial zoning. The company is now appealing the decision to the parish council.
A hearing on the matter had been scheduled for Thursday, January 3, 2013. But St. Tammany Councilman Marty Dean asked for the hearing to be delayed. There's no word when it will be rescheduled.
The land in question is off Brewster Road near Interstate 12. People living in nearby Belle Terre Subdivision have voiced their concerns about a big box store building in their area.
Goux Properties owns 37 acres on the site. 27 of the acres are already zoned for heavy commercial use.
Sources say Wal-Mart is interested in developing a new store on the land but the company would neither confirm nor deny the claim.
