FOX - Quitting smoking may lower a smoker's anxiety levels.

British researchers studied 500 people who were trying to quit smoking and followed them for six months.

Out of the 68 who remained smoke-free, those diagnosed with an anxiety or mood disorder showed lower levels of anxiety compared to smokers with mood or anxiety disorders that weren't able to remain smoke free.

Among those who started smoking again, those who smoked "for pleasure" experienced no change in anxiety levels, while those who used smoking for a coping mechanism did show an increase in anxiety.

The findings appear in the "British Journal of Psychiatry."
