New Orleans, La. – Crews begin demolition of the former Rosenwald Center in the B.W. Cooper neighborhood to make way for a new 24,000 square foot facility.

The new multi-purpose community center will include a gym with a stage, activity and meeting rooms, a snack bar and fully restored pool.

Construction is expected to be complete by the spring of 2014.

Council member Latoya Cantrell says it is a project the Broadmoor community is eagerly awaiting.

"You're talking about thousands of people, particularly young people, that will be impacted by a public private partnership that will bring recreation, education and development," said Cantrell.

She calls it an exciting day for families and children.

When the Rosenwald Center first opened in 1950, it was the only facility of its kind available to African American children because of segregation.
