New Orleans murder suspect also suspected in Slidell killing

Slidell, La. -- A man who turned himself in to New Orleans police in connection with a murder in Gert Town Sunday is also a suspect in a murder late Monday night in Slidell.

"This is eight days into the New Year and we've already had the first homicide here in St. Tammany Parish," said Slidell Police Chief Randy Smith.

Smith said 21-year-old Warren Pryor was found shot to death near the Chase Bank at Lakewood Drive and Gause Boulevard, just before 11:00 Monday night.

"Upon arrival we discovered an individual who had been shot three times," Smith said.

Smith resided in St. Tammany parish, according to investigators.  Authorities said, after he was shot, his car was taken from the murder scene and burned in New Orleans.  "It was later recovered in New Orleans this morning," the chief told us Tuesday.

Chief Smith confirmed that 20-year-old Michael Smith, the suspect in a murder Sunday on Audubon Court in New Orleans, is now a suspect in Pryor's death.

"We know that he turned himself in on a warrant, an outstanding warrant for second degree murder issued through the New Orleans Police Department.  We also believe he is a suspect in the homicide that we are currently working here in Slidell," the chief said earlier in the day.

An NOPD spokeswoman said Smith turned himself in and would be booked with second degree murder in the New Orleans case.

As to a motive in the Slidell murder, the police chief said they are still trying to piece together that.

"At this point we do not have a motive, except the shooting that occurred in New Orleans, and we're not sure why another individual was shot and killed here in Slidell," the chief stated.

He said his investigators are working to pull everything together.  "This individual does have ties to Slidell and in New Orleans.  We do believe he's a suspect in our homicide," said Smith.
