BELLE CHASSE, La. (AP) - The Pointe-a-la-Hache ferry landing has been closed indefinitely as unsafe. A Plaquemines Parish news release says the Department of Transportation and Development ordered it closed immediately on Wednesday.
The landing was damaged by Hurricane Isaac. The parish has been working on repairs for more than a year to keep it running. It says the landing isn't eligible for Federal Emergency Management Administration aid because a previous administration didn't give any details about repairs that FEMA paid for after Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
"We have been asking for over a year to consolidate the Belle Chasse Ferry and Pointe-a-la-Hache Ferry into one location in the center of the parish. This would have allowed us to get ahead of the game and assure east bank residents ferry service for the next 30 years and save the parish millions of dollars," said Parish President Billy Nungesser.
The Army Corps of Engineers has advised against rebuilding a landing at Pointe-a-la-Hache because the levees won't support it, according to the parish.
Ferry traffic is expected to increase at the Belle Chasse location and residents are encouraged to add extra time to their commute.
